Alex Ovechkin has said 2026–27 will be his final NHL season. This bobblehead keeps him the way Washington will remember him, in the middle of a goal celebration.
The figure wears the navy Capitals sweater with the crest on the chest and the captain's C on the shoulder. One glove lifts the stick high above his head, the other is clenched in a fist, and one knee is pulled up as if he has just leapt off the ice. The sculpt catches the grey-flecked hair, the short beard and the wide grin.
He stands on a round white-and-navy base with "Alex Ovechkin" lettered across the front. Nobody walking past a Capitals desk will need the name, but it is a nice touch for the next generation of fans.
Rinkside with a puck, a scarf and a red Capitals cap.
The celebration is the most familiar sight in Washington hockey
For two decades, the moment after an Ovechkin goal has been part of the show. He has never been a player who taps gloves quietly and skates back to the bench. The raised stick and pumped fist on this figure are the shorthand every Capitals fan recognises.
He has also done it in one uniform the whole time. Ovechkin has played his entire career in Washington, wore the captain's C from January 2010 and became known simply as "the Great 8."
Twenty-two seasons fit on one short list
The milestones read like a franchise history, because in many ways they are one. Few players have shaped a club this completely:
- 2004: Washington takes him first overall in the NHL draft.
- 2005–06: his debut season ends with the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookie.
- January 2010: he is named team captain.
- 2018: the Capitals win the Stanley Cup, and he takes the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
- 6 April 2025: goal 895, against the New York Islanders, passes Wayne Gretzky's regular-season record of 894.
- October 2026: in a letter before the home opener, he says 2026–27 will be his last NHL season.
Held up in a fan cave lined with pucks, pennants and signed photos.
A farewell season is the right time to start a shelf
Every home game this winter carries a little extra weight, and fans are already collecting the things that will remind them of it. A celebration pose belongs on that shelf more than a stiff portrait would.
It sits easily beside other team figures, such as this hockey players bobblehead, and it is just as welcome on an office desk in Washington. For a parent who watched him arrive in 2005, it is a thoughtful way to mark how it ends.
Under red and blue light, the stick stays raised.
