Sir Patrick Stewart The Captain's Pen Make It So Tribute Rollerball Pen

This pen is finished in a rich crimson lacquer with a glossy black cap and gold-tone bands at the cap, the centre ring and the tip. The pocket clip is shaped like a slim arrowhead in gold, echoing the delta badge Starfleet officers wore on their chests, and a second gold delta sits in relief on the barrel just below the cap.

The engraving runs in fine gold letters. One side of the barrel reads Sir Patrick Stewart with the dates 1940 – 2026 beneath it, the opposite side carries a flowing reproduction of his signature, and the black grip ring above the nib is engraved with Make It So. Laid on a desk, it looks like something a captain would sign orders with.

The command that became a catchphrase was really about trust

On Star Trek: The Next Generation, Captain Jean-Luc Picard rarely barked orders. He listened to his officers, weighed their advice and then gave the decision a simple shape: "Make it so." The phrase handed the action back to the crew, which is why it sounded less like a command than a vote of confidence.

Fans have used it for decades to close meetings, sign off emails and settle family arguments. Engraving it on a pen fits that habit, because a pen is the tool people use when a decision is finally made and it is time to put it in writing.

Patrick Stewart started his working life with a notebook

Long before the stage and the screen, Stewart quit the classroom at 15 and took a job on a Yorkshire newspaper, where he worked for roughly a year. Writing up council meetings and local events taught him to listen closely and say things plainly, a discipline that later served an actor whose greatest weapon was a clear sentence delivered without waste.

He came back to writing at the end of his life. His memoir, Making It So, was published in 2023, and its title borrowed the very phrase engraved on this pen. In it he wrote about his childhood, the theatre that shaped him and the roles that made him famous, in the same measured voice audiences knew from the bridge.

Words were his instrument right up to the final years

In 2020, when theatres around the world went dark, Stewart began reading one of Shakespeare's sonnets each day on social media. Sitting at home with a book in his hand, he turned a lockdown into a small daily ritual for millions of people, proving that a single voice and fourteen lines could still fill a room.

The engraved signature carries the same spirit. A pen is a modest object, but it is the one most likely to be picked up every day, used for a note, a card or a page of a journal, and in that way it keeps a little of his love of language close at hand.

A desk gift that honours how he worked

This makes a thoughtful present for a graduate starting out, a colleague retiring after years of steady leadership, or the fan who keeps a copy of Making It So on the shelf. It sits comfortably in a shirt pocket thanks to the delta clip and looks just as good resting in its gift box on a bookcase.

He passed away in Los Angeles in late October 2026, aged 86. For another way to remember a much-loved performer lost this year, the Tim Curry memorial tribute tumbler shows how a daily object can quietly carry a legacy.

Crimson for the uniform, gold for the legend and three famous words on the grip: this is a pen for signing the things that matter. Pick it up, decide, and make it so.
