Van Halen 55th Anniversary 1972-2027 Christmas Advent Calendar 55 Years of Rock and Roll

It lasts barely a minute and forty seconds. Tucked between "Runnin' with the Devil" and "You Really Got Me" on Van Halen's 1978 debut, Eddie Van Halen reaches over the neck and hammers notes with his picking hand, so fast the sound breaks into sparks. Guitarists had tapped before, but nobody had made it sound like that.

Fifty-five years after two brothers from the Netherlands started a band in Pasadena, twenty-four ornaments trace the road from backyard parties to sold-out arenas. On the cover Eddie leans back with his striped guitar, flanked by David Lee Roth in full cry, Sammy Hagar in red and Alex behind the drums.

The band, the guitar, the amp and the album covers, all 24 in one view.

Two brothers from the Netherlands built the band in Pasadena

Eddie and Alex grew up in Nijmegen, sons of the musician Jan Van Halen, and moved to Pasadena with their family in 1962. In 1972 they formed a band called Mammoth, played every party that would have them, and soon added David Lee Roth, bassist Michael Anthony and a new name taken from their own.

Alex is still the keeper of that story. In 2026 he was made a Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion in Nijmegen, sat down with Roth at TEDxFargo in September, and confirmed new Van Halen music built from unreleased recordings of Ed and Al with Steve Lukather. His ornament keeps him behind the kit in dark glasses.

Laid out on wood with guitar picks scattered between the ornaments.

Eddie's striped guitar became a logo of its own

Eddie assembled his "Frankenstrat" from parts he liked and painted it with strips of tape, turning a homemade guitar into one of the most recognizable instruments in rock. The red, white and black stripes appear here twice, once in his hands and once on their own, while the VH logo returns on the bass drum of Alex's kit.

The amp marked 5150 carries the name of Eddie's home studio and, later, his own line of amplifiers, and a hot-rod engine nods to the Lamborghini he revved for a recording on "Panama". Eddie died on 6 October 2020, thirteen years after the band entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Three album covers hide among the ornaments

Fans who know their records will spot the covers first. Each one has been shrunk to the size of a palm:

• A red flag with a white diagonal stripe is the diver-down flag from Diver Down (1982), the signal that someone is underwater.
• The little cherub is Margo Nahas's painting from 1984, the album that gave the world "Jump", "Panama" and "Hot for Teacher".
• A chrome sphere with the VH logo is the ball lifted on the cover of 5150 (1986), the first album with Sammy Hagar and the band's first number one, reissued in an expanded 40th anniversary edition in May 2026.

Around them sit a vinyl record, a cassette labeled Van Halen, a gilded angel, a shark-mouthed aircraft nose and a round tower. Consider them puzzles for fans to argue over at the tree.

Both voices of Van Halen share the countdown

David Lee Roth gets the ornament that sums him up, launched into a mid-air split kick, alongside a portrait with microphone in hand. He fronted the band until 1985, came back for the reunion years and sang on A Different Kind of Truth, the 2012 album reissued on 23 October 2026.

Sammy Hagar stands beside him in red, a pairing many fans never expected to see on one shelf. The two bass-playing figures and the group portrait nod to Michael Anthony, now on the road with Hagar, and to Wolfgang Van Halen, who took over the bass in 2006. Eddie and the striped guitar on the front of the box, ready for 1 December.

By Christmas Eve the whole story hangs on the branches, from Pasadena backyards to the long goodbye. Put the striped guitar where the lights hit it first, because Eddie never played anything quietly.
