The Simpsons King-Size Homer Muumuu Plush Toy

On 5 November 1995, Fox viewers watched Homer find a loophole. In "King-Size Homer", the seventh episode of season seven, he learns that a worker heavy enough to be classed as disabled can do his job from home, so he sets out to eat his way to 300 pounds and never commute again.

The plan works, in the Homer way. He hits the target, trades his white shirt and tie for a flowered muumuu and a little hat, and sets up at home with a computer and a drinking bird that taps the keyboard for him. The episode turns 31 this week, and that outfit is still one of the most recognisable looks in the show's history.

Homer in full muumuu, standing beside his pink-and-blue window box.

The plush catches Homer at peak muumuu

Every part of the costume is here. The light-blue muumuu is scattered with big pink flowers and green leaves, the white cap perches a little too high, and blue shoes peek out under the hem. His yellow arms hang wide at his sides, and the round eyes and stubbled jaw give him the calm look of a man with no commute.

The window box matches him in pink and pale blue, with more flowers and "King-Size Homer" printed under The Simpsons logo. He displays well inside it, but most people will want him out on the sofa where he belongs.

Held up in a living room, Homer looks ready for a long day of not leaving the house.

Working from home was a joke until it became normal

"Where's the any key?" Homer asks, staring at a screen that tells him to press any key to continue.

In 1995 the idea of doing your job from the kitchen table was pure fantasy, which is exactly why the episode was so funny. A generation later, millions of people spend their days on video calls in comfortable clothes, and Homer's muumuu looks less like a punchline and more like a prediction.

The episode does not end on the sofa, of course. When the plant faces disaster, Homer saves the day in the most Homer way possible, and Mr. Burns rewards him by paying for liposuction.

He belongs on a sofa, a desk or a Simpsons shelf

He suits anyone who works from home and could use a colleague who never interrupts. He also makes a soft desk mascot for the office worker who misses those days, and a funny present for a dad who has been known to wear something comfortable on a Tuesday.

Collectors can stand him beside our Santa Homer plush for two very different Homers. One is dressed for Christmas, and the other is dressed for no reason at all.

On the sofa, beside a knit throw, Homer has found his office.
