Most stadiums rise toward the sky. Michigan's was dug into the ground, and a century later the bowl still swallows more than a hundred thousand people on a fall Saturday.
In 1927, Fielding Yost, Michigan's athletic director and the coach who had built its early football teams, chose to sink his new stadium into the earth instead of stacking it upward. Fans still walk in near the top of the bowl and look down toward a field that sits well below the streets around it. The crowd arrives the way water fills a basin, row by row, until the sides disappear under maize and blue.
This decanter marks the hundredth birthday of that basin. A deep cobalt-blue bottle carries a gold crown stopper and a gold neck band reading Michigan, and its label wraps a painted portrait of the stadium in gold laurels, with Michigan Stadium across the top, 100th Anniversary 1927–2027 in the middle, The Big House in script beneath and a block M to finish. It stands beside a navy case stamped with the same M, the same dates and a line drawing of the stadium in gold.
The cobalt decanter and its navy case, both stamped 1927–2027.
The label paints the bowl on a full Saturday
At the heart of the label sits the stadium entrance in brick and blue, with a green field running toward the viewer and a maize M at midfield. The stands on either side are packed in yellow and blue, while two black-and-white panels at the edges recall the stadium's earliest photographs, taken long before color film and the later rounds of seating.
The packed stands are not artistic license. Every home game since 8 November 1975 has drawn more than 100,000 people, and ten expansions have brought the listed capacity to 107,601. Few buildings in American sport have stayed full for so long.

A century of football fits on one timeline
Michigan Athletics announced on 22 April 2026 that the whole 2027 season will celebrate the centennial, with special events, a commemorative logo and keepsakes. These are the dates the decanter quietly points back to.
| Date | Moment |

The decanter is made for a measured toast
A bottle like this earns its place on the day something ends well: a rivalry win, a graduation, a retirement party for someone who has held season tickets since the seventies. Pour a careful glass for each guest, raise it to a hundred years of Saturdays, and leave the case open on the shelf so the gold M catches the lamplight.
Between occasions it belongs in a study or a den, where it reads as décor first. Set it beside our Michigan Wolverines winged helmet ornament at Christmas, and the famous helmet and the stadium it plays in share the holidays side by side.
A measured pour at the desk, with the centennial case standing guard.
The stadium has spent a hundred years filling up on Saturdays and emptying out by evening. This bottle keeps a little of that rhythm at home, ready for the next good reason to raise a glass.
