Led Zeppelin Stairway to Winter 2026 Advent Calendar 24 Nights of Rock Mysticism

Card number nine in the tarot deck is The Hermit, a cloaked figure alone on a high ridge, holding up a lamp so others can find the path. Jimmy Page chose him for the inside of the band's untitled fourth album. Here he stands on a crag in a dark red cloak while a stone stairway winds through the clouds toward a full moon, where four small silhouettes are already climbing.

Celtic knotwork frames the scene and ivy curls along the spine. The title promises 24 Nights of Rock Mysticism, which is a fair description of the band itself: half folk tale, half thunderstorm.

Four musicians signed the fourth album with four symbols

The band's name never appeared on the sleeve of that 1971 record. Each member chose a sign instead, and the four marks became the closest thing the album had to a title:

• Jimmy Page picked the mark fans read as "Zoso" and has never fully explained it. His ornament carries the double-neck guitar he played "Stairway to Heaven" on in concert.
• John Paul Jones chose three interlocking ovals inside a circle. He sits at a keyboard here, since the band's bassist was just as at home on organ.
• John Bonham took three interlocking rings. Behind his drums, even the quietest Zeppelin song seems to wait for a storm.
• Robert Plant drew a feather inside a circle. The feather returns on its own ornament beside a crescent moon.

Beside a fireplace and a record player, set for a long winter night.

The Hermit leads the way through the remaining doors

Most of the other ornaments read like illustrations for songs. A black dog howls under the moon for "Black Dog", a ridge of misty peaks belongs to "Misty Mountain Hop", and a crashing wave carries the cold northern charge of "Immigrant Song". An acoustic guitar recalls the gentler songs Page and Plant wrote in a remote Welsh cottage in 1970.

Then there is the winged figure. When the band launched its own label, Swan Song, in 1974, the logo was based on a painting by the American artist William Rimmer, and the angel ornament nods to it. Standing stones, stained glass and a sun-and-moon medallion make the rest feel like a book of legends.

The Hermit, the double-neck guitar, the angel and a concert ticket laid out around the box.

A New York block became one of rock's great covers

One ornament looks like an ordinary city building, and that is the point. Physical Graffiti in 1975 pictured the tenements at 96 and 98 St. Mark's Place in New York, with windows cut out of the sleeve so faces from the inner sleeves peered through.

The calendar does not pretend the story went on forever. John Bonham died on 25 September 1980, and by December the others had decided they could not continue without him. They returned for one night at London's O2 Arena on 10 December 2007 with his son Jason on drums, and Jason still tours the songs in 2026 with his Led Zeppelin Evening.

Standing on a desk among records, the four musicians face the Hermit and his lantern.

Long December nights suit music this mysterious

The records sound bigger after dark, and there is something right about opening one small door at a time on music built around hidden meanings. Play the fourth album on the first night and count how many of its pictures turn up before Christmas.

For a friend who already owns a rock Christmas advent calendar from a later generation, this one adds the mystic side of the seventies. It also suits anyone whose first song on guitar was "Stairway to Heaven".

Held up in a sunny living room, ready for the first night of the climb.
