Florida Gators 120th Anniversary 1906-2026 The Swamp Legacy Building Block Set

Spurrier had earned the right to talk that way. His Gators won every home game in his first two seasons as head coach, and after 1991 he wanted a name that made Florida Field sound as miserable as it felt from the visitors’ sideline. In June 1992 Gainesville Sun columnist Mike Bianchi printed the idea along with Spurrier’s own explanation: “A swamp is where Gators live. We feel comfortable there, but we hope our opponents feel tentative.” Nobody in Gainesville has called the place anything else since.

The Swamp Legacy rebuilds the stadium that earned the nickname. Blue and orange seating wraps the bowl, the press box carries the Ben Hill Griffin Stadium name between two floodlight towers, and orange corner walls announce “This Is The Swamp” and “Florida Gators.” Palm trees guard the gates, and a black-and-gold plaque reads 120th Anniversary, 1906–2026.

A hundred and twenty seasons stand behind that plaque

Florida first played football in 1906, the year the university opened in Gainesville, and has fielded a team every autumn since except 1943, when World War II took the players. Six dates explain why this anniversary carries so much weight.

Year	What happened
1906	The first Florida football season
1930	Florida Field opens, the stadium that grows into the Swamp
1966	Quarterback Steve Spurrier wins the Heisman Trophy
1996, 2006, 2008	Three national championships, with Danny Wuerffel (1996) and Tim Tebow (2007) adding Heismans along the way
2016	The playing surface is renamed Steve Spurrier-Florida Field
2026	The 120th season, Year One under Jon Sumrall, and twenty years since the 2006 football and basketball titles

Four figures bring a Gainesville Saturday onto the field

A quarterback in No. 15 sets up to throw near the hash marks, a nod to the number Tim Tebow wore. A coach in a headset raises both hands, a referee signals from the far side, and the alligator mascot in an orange F jersey throws his arms up like the student section on third down. Florida and Gators fill the end zones, with the gator-head logo at midfield.

Up close, orange aisles slice through the blue seating, and the floodlight towers lean over the corners as if a night kickoff is minutes away. The plaque sits low on the front wall, right where a visitor reads it on the way in.

Gator families who plan the fall around kickoff will feel at home

Ask a Florida graduate about the Swamp and you usually get a story about heat, noise and one particular game. The model is a prompt for those stories in a home office, a den or a dorm room that needs more orange and blue.

Wear our Florida Gators quarter-zip sweater while you work on it and the room is dressed for game day. Let the stands fill in over a few evenings, the way the real ones do in the hour before kickoff.

A century and two decades after the first season, the Swamp still makes the same promise to visitors. This version keeps it on your desk, where the only team that gets out alive is yours.
