The Backrooms Advent Calendar 2026

The cover is a single yellow corridor: patterned wallpaper, rows of ceiling panels, worn carpet and a column every few steps. In the foreground an explorer in a yellow hazmat suit and backpack aims a flashlight down the hall, while ahead of them a black shape with a glowing grin hangs in the dark, a pale figure peeks around a corner, a long-limbed hound crouches along the wall and a red balloon floats over a lit Christmas tree. THE BACKROOMS and "24 Days of Liminal Nightmares" run across the top in glitching letters.

The numbered ornaments carry the same cast. A shaggy black creature with a toothy glowing smile, a yellow-suited figure in a party hat, a hound, a winged moth-like shape, a blue parrot on a branch, a hatted shadow, a hooded figure holding a key and orange and yellow hazmat explorers fill the first doors. The finish is all objects: a bottle labeled ALMOND WATER, a red balloon, a flashlight, an open doorway, a green EXIT sign and an explorer handing a wrapped gift to a yellow partygoer.

The yellow room started as a single unsettling photograph

The Backrooms began in 2019 on 4chan’s /x/ board, where an image of an empty, yellow-papered room was posted in a thread about eerie pictures and became the seed of a shared story: you "noclip" out of reality and land in endless office-like rooms, with damp carpet, buzzing lights and no exit. People kept adding levels and creatures until it grew into an internet mythology with its own rules. The calendar’s cover is faithful to that origin, with nothing but wallpaper, panels and carpet, so the monsters do the rest.

A found-footage short film turned a creepypasta into a world

In 2022 Kane Parsons, posting as Kane Pixels, uploaded a found-footage short that treated the Backrooms as a lost research project and gave it a look people could not stop talking about. A24 then released Parsons’ feature version on May 29, 2026, with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve in the cast, which pushed the Backrooms from a web legend into mainstream cinemas.

The hazmat explorer on the cover, flashlight raised, owes that found-footage look. It is the figure the genre trained audiences to expect at the end of a hallway.

Almond water is the one supply every wanderer carries

An ALMOND WATER bottle is its own ornament on this calendar, and for fans it is the quickest in-joke on the list. In the community’s lore, almond water is the drink that keeps lost wanderers going, so the bottle works as a tiny passport into the mythology, right next to the flashlight, the open doorway and the green EXIT sign. Those last doors read like a survival kit more than a monster lineup, which gives the countdown a rhythm of fear first and relief after.

Party hats turn the dread into a December joke

The yellow figures in cone-shaped party hats, one grinning, one holding a gift with an explorer, are the calendar’s sense of humor. Pairing a cheerful hat with a smile that goes too wide is the kind of contrast the community loves, and it fits a holiday where the tree on the cover stands lit at the end of an empty corridor.

Liminal spaces, the hallways and waiting rooms you are meant to pass through, feel uncanny when they are empty, and a Christmas tree in the middle of one makes the effect stranger. For more internet-horror shelf company, see the Creepypasta advent calendar.
