The Phillie Phanatic has never done anything quietly. His Christmas ornament arrives the same way, mid-launch, tongue out and riding in style.
The green, furry Phanatic wears a pinstriped Phillies jersey and a Santa hat with the red P. He leans out of the back of a green utility cart and fires his launcher, a hot dog flying out in a spray of confetti. A fan in a red Phillies cap and a navy shirt drives, and a giant hot dog with a stripe of mustard rides in the cargo bed.
The whole scene sits on a snowy base with a small Christmas tree and a red gift box. Snow is piled around the wheels, as if the cart has just driven in from the parking lot.
The Phanatic fires one off from the back of the cart.
The Phanatic arrived in 1978 and never left
He first appeared on 25 April 1978 at Veterans Stadium. Bonnie Erickson and Wayde Harrison designed him, and Erickson had already designed Miss Piggy, which explains a lot about his personality.
Almost fifty years later he is part of the team's identity. Phillies fans plan their trips to the ballpark around seeing him.
His story starts in the Galápagos Islands
Every great mascot needs a backstory. His is gloriously odd, and most Phillies fans can recite it:
- Home: the Galápagos Islands, according to his long-standing biography.
- Debut: 25 April 1978, at Veterans Stadium.
- Designers: Bonnie Erickson and Wayde Harrison.
- Honours: a member of the first class inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame, in 2005.
- Titles witnessed: the Phillies' World Series wins of 1980 and 2008.
A hand hooks the cart onto a branch.
The hot dog launcher is the part fans wait for
Between innings he rides his vehicle around the field and fires hot dogs into the stands. Whole sections stand up and wave in the hope of catching one.
The ornament freezes the best second of that routine. The sausage is airborne, the confetti is flying and the Phanatic's tongue is out in triumph.
Close in: the tongue, the Santa hat and a hot dog in flight.
The driver could be any fan in red
The person behind the wheel is not anyone in particular. He is a fan in a Phillies cap, along for the ride, and that is the point.
Every Phillies fan has imagined riding next to the Phanatic. This ornament gives them the seat.
Surrounded by red and gold baubles.
It hangs best on a tree that roots for Philadelphia
The ornament belongs on the tree of a family that spends summers at the ballpark. It pairs well with a personalized Phillies Christmas sweater for a full holiday outfit.
It is also a cheerful stocking present for children. Few mascots are as instantly lovable, or as much fun to explain.
Finding the perfect branch for the Phanatic.
