The Lionel Messi Tribute AFA Coca-Cola Golden #10 Football Jersey arrives immediately after that No. 10 chapter reached its end. Lionel Messi played his final match for Argentina at the Monumental on October 6, 2026, closing a senior international career that began in 2005 and finished with 207 appearances, 125 goals and four senior titles. Argentina beat Benin 3–0 that night, with Messi scoring the final goal of his national-team career. AFA
That timing changes how the design reads. The AFA crest and three stars on the front belong to Argentina’s longer history; MESSI 10 in gold across the back now belongs to a completed one.

Three stars place Messi inside a history that began before him
The front of the jersey does not begin with Messi’s name. It begins with Argentina.
At the center sits the AFA crest, framed by a radiating white sunburst and topped by three gold stars. Those stars represent Argentina’s World Cup victories in 1978, 1986 and 2022. AFA added the third star to the national-team shirt after the Qatar triumph, where Argentina defeated France in the final and Messi captained the team to the title that had defined so much of his international pursuit. AFA
That creates an important visual hierarchy.
The first two stars belong to generations that came before Messi. The third belongs to the team he captained. By keeping all three above the crest rather than turning the shirt into a portrait collage, the design places Messi’s achievement inside Argentina’s national-team history instead of presenting his career in isolation.
The surrounding sunburst strengthens that ceremonial quality. Pale rays extend outward from the crest while the familiar celeste-and-white palette remains visible underneath, so the front reads less like a conventional striped match shirt and more like a commemorative interpretation of the Argentina colors.

The back reduces the farewell to two things: Messi and 10
Turn the jersey around and almost everything disappears.
There is no trophy montage, career timeline or farewell sentence. MESSI appears across the shoulders, while an oversized gold 10 occupies most of the back.

That restraint works particularly well after October 6.
AFA’s own farewell coverage repeatedly treated Messi and Argentina’s No. 10 as inseparable ideas. After his final match, the association described the close of a national era through the departure of the captain and the No. 10 shirt, while emphasizing that the shirt and legacy remain part of Argentina’s football memory. AFA
For more than two decades, the number moved with Messi through a difficult relationship with international football: lost finals, criticism, his brief 2016 retirement, his return, Copa América 2021, Finalissima 2022, the World Cup in Qatar, another Copa América in 2024 and the final 2026 World Cup campaign. AFA formally announced his retirement on August 31, 2026, before organizing the October farewell at Monumental. AFA
The gold No. 10 therefore does not need additional wording such as “legend” or “greatest.” Its scale carries the tribute on its own.
The gold sponsor graphics place the design firmly in 2026
Google Gemini and Coca-Cola would be easy to treat as peripheral branding, but both connect the jersey visually to the final year of Messi’s Argentina career.
In March 2026, AFA announced Google Gemini as the Main Sponsor Global of Argentina’s national teams, with Gemini serving as the central brand in the agreement and receiving presence on official national-team training apparel. AFA
Coca-Cola was also part of the public farewell environment. At the AFA “Gracias, Leo” Fan Fest held on October 6, Coca-Cola was among the participating sponsor brands running fan activations during the day-long event built around Messi’s final Argentina appearance. AFA
On this jersey, both names are rendered in gold rather than their usual brand colors. That decision visually folds them into the tribute instead of allowing them to compete with the AFA crest.
The result feels rooted in one specific football moment: Argentina in 2026, after the third star and at the point when Messi’s international career reached its final day.

A farewell jersey works differently once the final match has happened
Before October 6, a tribute shirt could anticipate a farewell. After it, the same imagery becomes retrospective.
Messi’s last Argentina match at the Monumental included the national anthem with his three sons beside him, a packed stadium, a full farewell program and a 3–0 victory over Benin. Messi scored Argentina’s third goal, giving the night a final football moment that matched the ceremony around it. AFA
The jersey does not attempt to illustrate all of that.
Instead, the front preserves the national symbols that were already there—the celeste and white, crest and three stars—while the back isolates the name and number associated with the departing captain.
That makes it more useful as a remembrance piece than an event poster would be. A photograph fixes one moment; MESSI 10 carries the entire period around it.

The shirt still makes sense where Argentina football is actually watched
The stadium image gives the tribute a useful real-world context.
From a few rows away, the detailed sunburst disappears into the light-blue-and-white body of the jersey, but the gold crest area remains visible. On the reverse, the much larger No. 10 would become the dominant identifier.
That means the design operates at two distances. Up close, the wearer can see three stars, crest, Messi emblem and 2026 sponsor-era details. In a crowd, the broad Argentina colors and gold No. 10 do most of the work.
After Messi’s farewell, that distinction feels appropriate. Argentina will continue playing without him; supporters will continue returning to stadiums and gathering for matches. The shirt belongs to that continuing fan environment while marking the player whose international chapter has already ended.
The national colors remain on the front. The name on the back is now history.
