Jack and Sally Gothic Romance Tumbler with Bone Handle

The white upper half of this tumbler carries a hand-drawn scene from Halloween Town: Jack Skellington, all pinstripes and long thin limbs, leans toward Sally with a red rose, while she sits in her patchwork dress before a purple tombstone at the foot of Spiral Hill. The lower half turns black, decorated with white swirls and a row of small Jack faces, so the cup fades from a love story into the night.

The handle is sculpted in white with knobbly joints like a bone, and the clear lid holds a black-and-white striped straw topped with a little white ghost dog, Zero, his nose ready to glow. Together, the handle and topper make the tumbler look like a prop from Halloween Town rather than a plain travel cup.

Jack and Sally's story ends on Spiral Hill

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, directed by Henry Selick and released in 1993, follows Jack, the Pumpkin King, as he tries to take over Christmas. Sally, the rag doll stitched together by Dr. Finkelstein, spends most of the film warning him it will go wrong. In the final scene the two finally meet on Spiral Hill under a full moon, and Jack realises that she was the one who understood him all along.

The scene on the tumbler borrows that ending. Spiral Hill's curl sits behind them, Sally keeps her careful posture, and Jack's rose turns the moment into the romance fans waited the whole film to see.

Sally's Song gives the tumbler its gothic mood

Sally's quiet ballad, "Sally's Song," is the film's emotional centre, a love song sung by a character who feels unseen. The muted purple, grey and black of the artwork echo that mood rather than the bright orange of Halloween decorations. It makes the cup feel romantic in a slightly melancholy way, which is exactly the tone fans of the film tend to love.

The red rose and Sally's patchwork colours are the only warm notes in the design, so they draw the eye first, just as Sally's patched dress does on screen. Everything else stays in the quiet greys and purples of the graveyard.

Zero rides along on the straw

Zero, Jack's loyal ghost dog with a glowing jack-o'-lantern nose, is the hero who guides the sleigh through the fog in the film's climax. Here he perches on top of the straw, a tiny sculpted topper that you can see from across the table. It is the kind of detail that makes people ask where you got your cup.

The black-and-white straw also mirrors Jack's pinstripes, tying the whole tumbler back to his suit. Pull the straw out and Zero comes with it, so he is never lost in the dishwasher drawer.

How fans use a Jack and Sally tumbler

1. As a daily coffee or iced-drink cup at work, where the handle makes it easy to carry
2. As a Valentine's Day or anniversary gift for a couple who call themselves "Jack and Sally"
3. As part of an October or December watch party for the film

For more from the same couple, the Nightmare Before Christmas Jack and Sally Mug brings the pair to the breakfast table, and the Jack and Sally Pink Glitter Tumbler is a sparkly alternative. Set side by side they make a matched pair for a couple.
