2026 Sports Champions: Seahawks, Hurricanes, Knicks, Brewers

Between February and October 2026, four American cities spent a combined 142 years waiting for one night. All four of them got it.
Seattle won the Super Bowl in February. Carolina lifted the Stanley Cup and New York won the NBA title within 24 hours of each other in June. Milwaukee closed the year by winning the World Series on October 28. Each title has been covered on its own, game by game, but almost nobody has put the four side by side. Seen together, they tell one story about patience, defense and players who were written off before they became champions.
This guide compares the 2026 champions of the NFL, NHL, NBA and MLB, looks at what made each title different, and points out the patterns the four teams share. Along the way, and in the gift guide at the end, you will find Doesignus collectibles made for fans of each champion.

2026 Was the Year the Long Waits Ended
The number that ties these four teams together is time. Seattle had not won a Super Bowl since February 2014. Carolina’s only previous Stanley Cup came in 2006. The Knicks last won the NBA title in 1973, when Walt Frazier and Willis Reed were still in the lineup. Milwaukee had never won the World Series at all, going back to the franchise’s single season as the Seattle Pilots in 1969.
Add those droughts together and you get 142 years: 12 for Seattle, 20 for Carolina, 53 for New York and 57 for Milwaukee. Plenty of fans in Milwaukee and New York had never seen their team win a title before this year, and many never expected to.

| League | NFL | NHL | NBA | MLB |
| Title | Super Bowl LX | Stanley Cup | NBA Finals | World Series |
| Clinched | Feb. 8, 2026 | June 14, 2026 | June 13, 2026 | Oct. 28, 2026 |

| Years since last title | 12 | 20 | 53 | First ever |

There is one more detail in that table that is easy to miss. None of the four teams won the title at home. Seattle won at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Carolina clinched in Las Vegas, the Knicks finished the job in San Antonio and the Brewers celebrated at Tropicana Field. Every one of these fan bases watched the final out, final whistle or final buzzer on a screen, so the parades back home carried even more weight than usual.
Seattle Won Its Second Super Bowl in the Franchise’s 50th Season
The Seahawks played their first game in 1976, so the 2025 season was the 50th in franchise history, and the players wore a “50” patch on their jerseys all year. It is hard to write a better script for an anniversary than a championship. Seattle earned the top seed in the NFC, beat the Los Angeles Rams 31-27 in the NFC Championship Game at Lumen Field, and then beat the New England Patriots 29-13 in Super Bowl LX on February 8.
The story of that night was the defense Mike Macdonald built, the unit fans call the “Dark Side.” Seattle sacked Drake Maye six times, with two each from Derick Hall and Byron Murphy II, and Maye fumbled twice. The play people still replay came when Devon Witherspoon hit Maye’s arm as he threw, the ball floated up, and Uchenna Nwosu caught it and ran 45 yards for a touchdown.

Uchenna Nwosu finishes his 45-yard interception return in Super Bowl LX, with the 50th-season patch on his jersey.
The offense played its part too. Kenneth Walker III ran 27 times for 135 yards and became the first running back named Super Bowl MVP since Terrell Davis in January 1998. Kicker Jason Myers set a Super Bowl record with five field goals. Running backs had been treated as replaceable pieces for most of the last two decades, so a Walker MVP felt like an argument for an old-fashioned way of winning.
The most human story, though, belonged to quarterback Sam Darnold. The New York Jets drafted him third overall in 2018, and he spent years being called a bust as he moved from team to team. He led the NFL with 20 turnovers during the regular season, then did not turn the ball over once in three playoff games. That makes him the first quarterback from the 2018 draft class to win a Super Bowl, ahead of Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson and Baker Mayfield.

Carolina Turned Its 2006 Captain Into a 2026 Champion Coach
When the Hurricanes won their first Stanley Cup in 2006, beating Edmonton in seven games, their captain was Rod Brind’Amour. He became head coach in 2018, and twenty years after lifting the Cup as a player, he lifted it again from behind the bench. Very few people in any sport have led the same franchise to a title in both roles.
Carolina’s run was one of the most dominant in recent memory. The Hurricanes went 16-3 in the playoffs and beat the Vegas Golden Knights in six games in the Final. In Game 6 on June 14, Taylor Hall scored just 3:47 into the first period, and goaltender Brandon Bussi stopped all 22 shots for a 3-0 shutout. A team known for defense closed out the Cup without allowing a goal.

Captain Jordan Staal with the Conn Smythe Trophy. At 37, he is the oldest player ever to win it.
Captain Jordan Staal won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. He scored six goals in the Final, and at 37 he became the oldest player ever to win the award. Staal won his first Cup with Pittsburgh in 2009, when he was 20. His older brother Eric was a key part of Carolina’s 2006 team, so the Staal family name is now tied to both of the franchise’s championships.
The scoring came from everywhere. Taylor Hall finished the playoffs with 7 goals and 12 assists, Jackson Blake had 7 goals and 13 assists, and Logan Stankoven scored 11 goals. For a market that people once doubted could support hockey, the parade said the most. Police estimated around 180,000 people downtown in Raleigh on June 20. In 2006, about 30,000 fans gathered around the arena. Hockey in the South has grown up.

The Knicks Ended 53 Years of Waiting With a 45-Point Night
Few fan bases have waited more loudly than Knicks fans. The franchise won titles in 1970 and 1973 and then spent more than half a century coming close or falling apart. The 2025-26 team finished 53-29 as the third seed in the East, beat Atlanta in the first round, and then got hot. New York swept Philadelphia, swept Cleveland in the conference finals and won 13 playoff games in a row, the second-longest streak in a single postseason in NBA history.
The Finals matched the Knicks against Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs. New York won the series 4-1 and finished it in San Antonio on June 13 with a 94-90 win, a tight, physical game in which every possession counted. Like Carolina, the Knicks went 16-3 in the playoffs. Their clincher came one night before the Hurricanes’, so two franchises ended long droughts within 24 hours of each other.

Jalen Brunson receives the Finals MVP trophy in San Antonio, surrounded by Knicks teammates in championship hats.
Jalen Brunson scored 45 points in Game 5, the first time a Knicks player had scored 40 or more in a Finals game. He was named Finals MVP after already winning the Eastern Conference Finals MVP. When Brunson signed with New York as a free agent from Dallas in the summer of 2022, plenty of people thought the Knicks had overpaid. Four years later, he gave them their first title since 1973.
Head coach Mike Brown, hired in 2025, won the fifth championship of his coaching career and his first in New York. The title also capped years of patient roster building around Brunson, with Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby alongside him.
Milwaukee Won the First World Series in Franchise History
The Brewers came to Milwaukee in 1970, a year after the franchise played its only season as the Seattle Pilots. They reached the World Series once before, in 1982, when the “Harvey’s Wallbangers” team lost to St. Louis in seven games. They lost Game 7 of the NLCS to the Dodgers in 2018 and were swept by the Dodgers in the 2025 NLCS. In 2026 they swept the Dodgers right back.
This was the best team Milwaukee has ever had. The Brewers went 103-59, a franchise record and their first 100-win season, then beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in the World Series. In Game 5 on October 28, Jacob Misiorowski threw 5⅔ scoreless innings, the Brewers won 4-1, and Brice Turang threw out Richie Palacios for the final out.

Catcher William Contreras was named World Series MVP. He hit .381 with 4 RBI, threw out 4 of 9 runners who tried to steal, and won 10 of 13 challenges in the first World Series with the automated ball-strike system. He is only the eighth catcher to win the award and the first Brewer. Milwaukee got him in a three-team trade in December 2022, the same year the Knicks signed Brunson. Jackson Chourio added 11 hits, the most by any player in a five-game World Series.

This was also the first Brewers championship season without Bob Uecker, the team’s radio voice for 54 seasons, who died in January 2025. The city celebrates on Friday, October 30, with a parade starting at 10 a.m. at North 4th Street and West Wisconsin Avenue and ending at Henry Maier Festival Park. Organizers expect more than 400,000 people.
What the Four 2026 Champions Have in Common
Four different sports, four different cities, and yet the same few threads run through all of these titles. Looking at them together explains more than any single recap does.
Defense closed out every championship
Seattle allowed 13 points in the Super Bowl. Carolina won the Cup with a shutout. The Knicks held San Antonio to 90 points in the deciding game. Milwaukee allowed one run in Game 5, and Misiorowski gave up just one run in 10⅔ innings across the whole World Series. Every champion won its final game by stopping the other team.
Two 16-3 runs, one day apart
The Knicks and Hurricanes finished with the same 16-3 playoff record and clinched on back-to-back nights, both on the road. Going 16-3 means winning four series while losing only three games in total. Two teams doing it in the same month, in two different sports, is a rare coincidence.
The MVPs broke old patterns
| Player | Award | What made it historic |
|---|---|---|
| Kenneth Walker III | Super Bowl MVP | First running back to win since 1998 |
| Jordan Staal | Conn Smythe Trophy | Oldest winner ever, at 37 |
| Jalen Brunson | NBA Finals MVP | First Knick with 40 or more points in a Finals game |
| William Contreras | World Series MVP | Eighth catcher and first Brewer to win |

Second chances built these teams
Darnold was let go by several teams before Seattle. Brunson was seen as a risky signing, and Contreras was the less-heralded piece of a three-team trade built around Sean Murphy. Brind’Amour went from captain to coach, and Staal won a Cup at 37. None of these champions was built around a can’t-miss superstar. They were built on players and coaches who got another chance and made the most of it.
